FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I get a PORT ALREADY OPEN error when trying to establish a dial-up connection?

A: That's Window's way of telling you some other device is using the modem. If some other device is actually using the modem (such as a voice/fax program or you are already on a dial-up connection), the solution is to terminate the other task, or to disable auto-answer features in its software.Sometimes, Windows gets confused, and it may seem like a reboot is the only answer. With Windows 95/98 in most cases, you can re-gain access to the port by terminating the "rnaapp" Task: Press CONTROL, ALT & DELETE - this will bring up the Windows Task Bar Close Program box.Look for the Rnaapp task, select it, and then click End Task.

Q: My modem won't hang up. How do you disconnect?

A: -Depending upon the software (especially 3rd-party), the procedure used to disconnect a call may vary. When using Microsoft Windows DUNs, an icon will appear in your System Tray (normally part of the Start Bar at the bottom right of the screen) which will give you disconnect option when clicked. (right click, left click, double-click). Check to make sure you are using the correct procedure to disconnect your call. -If your phone line is taken off-hook by the modem anytime it is powered on (the PC is on if internal), it is 'beyond repair'. Symptoms would include only being able to make the call if you plug the phone cord into the modem when you're ready to dial, or your line going 'dead' as long as the modem is plugged in. This can happen after a thunderstorm, and can also occur if your modem uses a newer all-electronic switch (proving to be somewhat less reliable than old electro-mechanical relay). Seek warranty replacement if applicable.

Q: When is the best time to surf the Internet?

A: -The best time to surf the Internet in South Africa is early in the morning until about 10AM the theory behind this is the Americans who are the biggest Internet uses are still in bed. This really works your downloads are definitely faster.

Q: What should my serial baud rate be set at?

A: -I always suggest the fastest speed that you serial port can handle, 115 200 bps if you experience problems then slow it down to 57 600 bps until your connection is reliable.

Q: Will increasing my browser cache improve performance?

A: -Yes it will, by increasing the size of your browser cache to about 100MB will improve the download time of pages that you frequently visit. Pages stored on your hard disk load faster that pages that have to be downloaded from the Internet.

Q: My 56K modem only connects at 32 000bps, what is the reason for this?

A: -There are lots of reasons for your modem to connect at a slower speed.1. Your modem driver is not the correct driver. Try downloading the correct modem driver for your modem for the vendors website.2. Your telephone line might be faulty. Ensure there is no noise, crackling or hiss when you pick up your receiver. Have Telkom to check you line if you are not sure.3. Your modem speed is not set to max. Check you modem setting in the Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modem.

Q: Will ISDN definitely speed up my Internet experience?

A: -Most definitely, ISDN delivers true 64Kbps connection which is digital. Most analogue 56K modem only really work at just over 40Kbps and can only upload at 33.6Kbps. ISDN delivers instant digital connections at a true 64Kbps up and down. The only problem with fairly new technology is that it's still expensive.

Q: What is 128Kbps ISDN?

A: -When you get Telkom to upgrade/install you ISDN line you actually get two 64Kbps channels. That's why with ISDN you can surf the Internet and still receive or make a call on the other channel. With 128Kbps ISDN you need Telkom to bridge both channels into one channel thus giving you effectively one 128K channel. You will loose the facility of making a call and surfing the internet at the same time but your channel will be a broadband channel and its fast. Your call costs will be the same as if you use only one channel. Your ISDN terminal adapter will need to support this facility.

Q: Can I Tweak my PC for optimum performance?

A: -Special software can tweak hidden settings in Windows to increase your modem's performance. The Windows default settings aren't ideal for modem users, simple tweaks can offer improved speeds but increases are not that great and you are still dependant on the web site you're visiting. You can try software like GetRight, SpeedNet, Internet Rocket, CableNut and TweakXP. Check out www.tucows.com for more freeware software.

Q: I get connected but I am unable to surf or download e-mail?

A: -If this problem happens once in a blue moon try rebooting your PC and Modem. If it happens every time you connect to the Internet, then you will need to remove your Microsoft Dial-up Adapter in Network Neighborhood and reinstall it. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network.

Q: How do I know which mirror server to use for downloads?

A: -It always been a golden rule to use the server that is closest to you and take into account if that country is sleeping at the time. To download from a USA server in the afternoon will be slow but to download from the same server early in the morning will definitely be quicker.
