ADSL Internet
An Overview of ADSL Internet
ADSL is essentially a technology that allows a high-speed connection between the user and the local exchange (also called the local loop) over a normal telephone cable. Due to restrictions on the existing equipment, a limited amount of bandwidth is available for users, and ADSL overcomes these restrictions to provide bandwidth of up to 8Mb to the user. Thus there is virtually no bottleneck of data that exist currently with other connections such as a normal dial-up. It must be stressed that ADSL only defines the connection between the local exchange and the end-user, and for a user to benefit from the service, sufficient bandwidth needs to be available on the Telkom and ISP backbone.
About ADSL
ADSL access service will provide an ultra-fast, dedicated link from your home or office to the Internet. The ADSL access service will allow you to surf the Internet while talking on the phone or sending a fax at the same time.
Your ADSL access bandwidth will not be affected if you are simultaneously using the phone or sending a fax. The ADSL access service will offer an always-available connection with no dial-up necessary, no more waiting to establish a connection and no more busy signals. You will not be billed for your connection time by Telkom when you make use of the ADSL access service to surf the Internet. The ADSL access service costs a flat rate monthly fee. You can convert your existing telephone line to ADSL or apply for a new ADSL line. Normal telephone calls will still be billed according to the Telkom rate. Note that there is a limit of traffic per month which can be topped up at any time. Bandwidth accounts start from 2GB up to 10GB accounts.
